Treatment for Cervical Cancer

The major types of treatment for cervical cancer include surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy. Biological therapies are also used for treating cancer of the cervix. The different kinds of approaches for cancer usually depend on the case and how early the disease has been diagnosed. Factors that can most likely affect treatment for cervical cancer include the type of tumor, the tumor’s location within the cervix, a woman’s age and general health, and plans for child bearing including the use of contraceptives.

When a woman undergoes treatments for cancer of the cervix serious side effects are usually associated. Moreover, women who are of childbearing age and have cervical cancer that is invasive must learn how to cope with the emotional cost of infertility as well as early menopause. Other women get their strength from strong support systems in order to cope properly with their conditions.

Surgical procedures for the treatment for cervical cancer include laser surgery, cryosurgery, cone biopsy or conization, LEEP, and hysterectomy. Laser surgery is a treatment that is only outpatient. This is only used for patients whose cancer has not yet spread. Its mechanism is to kill abnormal cells in a specified area. Cryosurgery involves the killing through the freezing of abnormal cervical cells using a metal probe that is cooled with liquid nitrogen. This is also use as treatment for cervical cancer that has not yet spread to the deep cervical tissue layers or beyond the cervix.

Cone biopsy on the other hand is a diagnostic and treatment procedure. This method involves the removal of a tiny piece of cone shaped tissue from the affected part of the cervix. His is usually done before surgery or radiation therapy.
